The Games are Almost Here!

Standard

Exactly one month from today one of the events I look most forward to begins: the Olympics. Ever since I was a little girl I have loved the Olympics. It is pretty much the only sporting event that I look forward to. I will even watch the USA compete in the sports that I usually avoid like the plague, things like basketball and soccer. I don’t know what it is, but there is something about the Olympics that just gets me excited.

I am not exactly what you could call a patriotic person, but when the Olympics come around it awakens something inside of me and I become extraordinarily patriotic. I can remember sitting in front of the television with my mom and sister every four years cheering for those representing our country. Whenever we would win a gold medal my mother would make us all stand up and place our hands over our hearts for the national anthem. My sister and I would grumble and groan, but we would always do it and, truth be told, we didn’t mind.

When I grew up and moved out on my own I carried the passion for the Olympics that my mother had instilled in me. I have very vivid memories of the 2004 summer games. That was the year that Florida was accosted by hurricane after hurricane (kind of like what is happening again this summer). During the two weeks of the games we were hit by yet another storm and the apartment complex I lived in spent several days with a brown out. But that did not keep me from enjoying the games. I sat on the floor in front of the TV with all the lights off and about five fans blowing on me so that I could watch the Hamm twins lead our male gymnastics team to the medal stand.

Then there were the 2008 summer games. That was the year of Michael Phelps. I remember sitting by myself in my house with my eyes glued to the television screen. I was completely alone, but you would have thought I was in the middle of a packed out stadium the way I was jumping up and down cheering him on. When he won that final gold medal by however many hundreths of a second I was screaming at the top of my lungs, jumping and clapping. It’s still strange for me to think about. Me, the girl who hates sports, cheering like a crazy person for a sporting event. I instantly called my mother and we squealed into the phone at each other. And I may have stood up during the national anthem and placed my hand over my heart.

With only one month to go the excitement is mounting. I can’t wait to watch the games this year. And the best part is, I am going to get to watch them with my mother again for the first time in 12 years. Instead of calling her 5 million times I will be sitting right next to her. SQUEEEEEE!! I’m so excited! I can already hear the Olympic anthem playing in my mind…

What about you? Do you enjoy watching the Olympics or is it something you are forced to endure for two weeks every four years? What are the events you look most forward to? Let me know in the comments.

  1. Fun post! I live about 40 minutes from Squaw Valley, home of the 1960 Winter Olympics — seeing the rings and the flame definitely evokes a sense of patriotism and pride in me, despite the fact that I’m not at all a “sports” person! :)

  2. Track and Field & swimming. I watched the swimming finals broadcasted from Omaha the other night. I love the Olympics! A tradition that runs deep in many cultures. It’s the one thing [besides FIFA Cup] that brings the World together on a peaceful human level! To think is started in Olympia, Greece in 776 BC!! The Games have grown in scale to the point that nearly every nation is represented with a mere 2000 participants. The best in the world. It chokes me up to even watch the trials and the thrill of victories…Everytime!
Thanks for posting this and congrats on being FP’d!!
    Cheers

    • I love both of those events and I love to think about the history of the games, too. It’s so fascinating when you really stop to think that they have been around for that long. Thank you for the comment and the congratulations. I am still stunned by the FP.

  3. Enjoyed your post. In 1988, I had the good fortune of traveling to Seoul, S. Korea for my business, and I timed it to coincide with that year’s Olympics. Easily one of the best decisions I’ve made. Congrats on being freshly pressed.

      • Then hop to it. Only so many of them in a lifetime, you have to plan ahead, then do it. You have ten of them in a normal adult-hood before you start traveling less at sixty. They won’t all be close, or in a country you want to go to, which makes it less than ten.

Easily the coolest sports experience of my life. I’m going to follow your blog so I can see when you decide to make it happen. How’s that for a kindly push?!? Ha ha.

  4. Totally love 24/7 Olympics! It is the first time in years that I regret not having cable – even more than Oscars’ awards season. Do you know if recaps will be played in the Internet? I know I can probably find it but since you love them as much as I do I am guessing you may already know!

    • Hmm…I’m not sure. I would imagine that there would be, but I don’t know. I will have my DVR set up to record everything during the day while I am at work so I can catch up when I get home. :)

      • I know, I am trying to avoid going back to the evil cable company. I’m still having issues disconnecting from them and can’t do dish because of who I rent from. I’m hoping espn will show highlights. I can watch those on netflix. Thanks for wandering through!

  5. So nice to hear someone excited about the olympics, and so looking forward to them. A lot of people over here in England, say the games are a waste of time and money. But not me, i’m with you, let the games commence and may the best team win.

      • I’m 200 miles from London, where the games are being held, but i shall have the best view, by watching it on TV. Luckily i haven’t got to stay up late or get up at silly o’clock in the morning to see it.

  6. So I love the opening and closing ceramonies, yes it’s going to be hard to beat what China did, but I have to say, there is something about the anticipation of the American Team coming out on the field and then the array of talent that is entertaining the audience for the opening.

    Just love it, can’t wait!

  7. Jessica I love the Olympics and am an avid watcher and collector. I too am glued to things I would otherwise not watch. The 1980 games were the my first and I went to 1984 and got to work (I was a 911 disaptcher at the time) at the Park City Venue on Olympic detail for 2002. I thought I was the only one getting ready for the count down for the games. My husband just rolls his eyes, but secretly I think that he thinks it is kinda cool for a couple weeks I am the one turning on Sports Center and jockying for the remote instead of him =)

  8. I love this post! I was fortunate enough to be in Vancouver for graduate school during the 2010 winter games and got to wander around downtown (and even see the torch from like 100 feet away!). It’s crazy to think that some of the events actually took place on the UBC campus.

I’m glad you get to watch the Olympics with your mother again–my mom and I used to enjoy watching them together as well. I think my favorite summer sport is gymnastics and my favorite winter sport is figure skating.

  9. Can’t wait to hear that beautiful music! U.S.A. U.S.A! We have a few sponsored athletes and are excited to see their Olympic experience. Come on July 27th

  10. I LOVE the Olympics! And I definitely love summer over winter, so I can’t wait. I think the part I like most is seeing all these countries come together, despite all the warfare and economic issues plaguing all of us!

  11. Congrats on being freshly pressed. I’m so excited I watching swimming and track & field events prior to the Olympics

  12. I call it American exceptionalism. We are a patriotic bunch of nuts who love our flag and revere our athletes when they go against the world. I get the chills every time I hear the National anthem played for one of our medal winners. Stay the way you are and love your country always. Thanks for sharing.

  13. I LOVE the Olympics. So much.

Australians are very into their sports so cheering on the Aussies is any sport is in our blood!

I had turned 18 a couple of months before the start of The Games in Sydney in 2000 and it was truly a once in live time experience. There is just an amazing vibe and buzz that goes along with it.

I really hope that they will be back in Australia so my kids get to experience it all.

Very jealous of Londoners knowing what they are going to be experiencing!

  14. Ahhh I can’t wait for the Games to start. Good post.

I may have an interview with a track and field participant competing in the Olympics. But, as everyone knows, these athletes are incredibly busy right now lol.

  15. Aww it’s so nice you and your mom will be able to watch it together! I’m the most interested in women’s swimming, diving, gymnastics and volleyball. Oh man women’s volleyball is the best.

  16. I feel exactly the same way!!! I’m not typically an extraordinarily patriotic person, or much of a sports fan, but when it comes to the Olympics, I immediately become both. It’s a great feeling, a great event, and I am super excited!!!

  17. I have had the awesome opportunity to have lived in 2 different states while they hosted Olympic games! In 1984 I lived in the Los Angeles area, and bought tickets to attend 3 different equestrian events (I am a huge fan of horses!) In 2002 we lived in Salt Lake City and the Olympic torch run was at the end of the street we lived on! We spent alot of time downtown as it was decorated really cool, with fun things to do, and we watched ice skating on a giant screen outside of the event center. It was pretty neat!

  18. Hi!!
I love this event and waiting for its kick off very eagerly. Hope to have a nice opening ceremony. Right now I am in India and people here too very excited for London Olympics.

  19. i live 10 minutes away from the olympic stadium and its amazing to see that run down area of london looking god! i can guarantee chaos on the transport links though and will be avoiding the area like the plaque! TV for me

  20. Love this post. As a kid I always loved the Olympics, especially when they came to Sydney in 2000 as I am Australian and we done assignments in school about the past Olympics. I am not a huge fan anymore but I still like to watch the gymnastics and the diving and the interesting parts of the opening and closing ceremonies :)

  21. yeah…love the post, BUT…dig this….i actually LIVE in london and have alwasy like you, wanted to be right there in the action, so i thought i’d get a ticket for myself and a few friends.
did i get them? did i get ANY? all a big joke…tickets have been siphoned off to, shall we say, more deserving peeps! and i applied last year, too! oh well….looks like everything else, even the olympics ahve been sidelined for the upper classes, whereas the normal joe bloggs on the street gets nothing! shame!

  22. Not as an enthusiastic olympics fan as most, but since it’s in England this year I may be convinced to pay more attention. The flame’s going through the town down the road this saturday (shame it’s at 7am though) and if the weather’s like it is atm I don’t know how it’ll stay alight :D

  23. Hi, I live 10 miles from the Olympic Park at Stratford but I’m sorry to say that the Olympics don’t interest me in the slightest.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m patriotic. I’ve followed England through the Rugby World Cup for more years than I care to reveal (I even paid a thousand pounds for 2 tickets to the World Cup Final in Paris in 2007) and I am REALLY excited that that tournament is coming to England in 3 years time.

I think it’s just that the dominance of a few countries in certain sports seems to dull the ‘competition’ element of the event. Maybe it’s just me being a grump?

The one thing I will watch though are the opening and closing events – for the firework displays. But that’s just from a professional viewpoint. And I’m so glad that a UK team is doing the displays in our own country. Not that I dislike the French, Groupe F, display team. But I AM patriotic about some stuff!

    J

  24. When the Olympics start I wish I have TV! Every time lol! But I go over to see my Grandma and watch, and I check the sports I like online. Wish I could spend the whole time just watching. That would be awesome! Hope you get to stand up and cheer a lot this year! :D

  25. Well, its the same for me! I am not at all into sports and in fact, I hate sports! But when stuff like Olympics and FIFA comes, I am all into it. I start cheering for countries I like and my country too. I am not much of a patriotic but when these stuff come on from nowhere suddenly I start cheering and shouting! More than Olympics, I am a big fan of FIFA and my favorite team is Germany since my country is not there.

In Olympics, I watch only a select few like swimming, badminton, artery, etc but I enjoy watching them. I start cheering for my country and it’s kind of fun. The fact is, I love it! I love all these sports seasons though I know only some of them (because I am so not into sports) but I always watch my favorite sports games.

Well, I am really happy in finding a person who has the same feelings as mine in sports! Anyways, congrats on being Freshly Pressed!

  26. I’m so excited to see if the men’s basketball team can attempt to dominate this year against the world’s best. I also want to see if Phelps is going to be overtaken by Lochte. Also soccer, track and field and gymnastics are some of my other favorites.

  27. Swimming is definitely my favorite event; now that I think of it, it’s probably an unconscious choice on my part to make up for not being able to swim. I’ve been a fan of Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte ever since the 2008 games, so of course I’ll be rooting for them.
I’ll also be looking forward to the gymnastics routines and diving. And of course the opening ceremony should be awesome!

  28. I love the Olympics and have watched them all my life. It doesn’t matter which sport either, I love them all. The diving is a favourite and we are fortunate to live in the same city as Tom Daley and Tonia Crouch who are sure to do well. Fingers crossed. I used to run for my school many years ago as well as do high jump, long jump, javelin and shot putt. I also LOVE tennis. Wimbledon’s on right now and it’s the best two weeks of the year for me. Great post. :)

  29. It doesn’t seem like 4 years since the last olympics, but I am more excited than ever. They are a wonderful way to look back at different points in your life and remember what you and your country were like at those times.

  30. I will be in the O2 arena on August 2nd watching the Women’s Gymnastics All Around Finals. Athletics, Rowing, Tennis, Swimming and the Diving are the other sports I will be keeping an eye on. Oddly, I am drawn to Weightlifting, but only during the Olympics. No idea why. :D

  31. I love the Olympics and I can’t wait either. I still remember the day London learnt that it was to be hosted here. I vowed then to be a part of it and seven years later I’m ecstatic that, although I’ve not got tickets for it, I do have tickets to the Paralympics and I am (well I will be) a volunteer for the Paralympics! :D

As for what I’m looking forward to watching; gymnastics and trampolining, diving and athletics :)

  32. It is no surprise that your blog made the ‘Freshly pressed’ section of WordPress. You not only write well, but you also write from the heart and with a lot of emotions. I am also looking forward to the Olympics, whether its Summer or Winter. The competition between Phelps vs Lochte will be a classic to watch and as their finger tips touch the wall at the finish, I will imagine you and you mother screaming and cheering in unison. Nice blog. and looking forward to reading more.

  33. I am so glad to find someone with the same passion about the Olympics as me. I absolutely love the sense of patriotism that comes with the games and the sense of community across the world that it creates. I do not really follow sport very much usually but I always watch the Olympics religiously. I get quite emotionally involved and feel genuine pride when WE achieve something. I wouldn’t like to take away from any personal achievement but there is something wonderful about the individual events still being part of a team effort. I love the Olympics and feel blessed to be living so close the 2012 events. We applied for as many tickets as we could afford and whilst we got none in the first round, we have ended up with some tickets for the athletics, boxing, hockey and swimming. My family from around the country are coming to stay too to take advantage of our proximity to Stratford. It’s going to be a wonderful time and I cannot wait to see the farmyard animals and the rain at the opening ceremony! Truely British ;) .

  35. Hello Jessica!

  36. I am not a sports guy but I enjoy the Summer Olympics when they deign to happen. The Winter Games are torture for me except hockey and they screw up my Thursday Night comedy block on NBC so I hate them.

  37. Great post! I am most looking forward to tennis! I’m an avid tennis fan that’s why :) Also, it is historic since it will be held at Wimbledon! Can’t wait! I wish I could attend the Olympics once in my life. Beijing was the closest it got but timing wouldn’t permit. Hopefully in 2016 in Rio!

  38. Like you, the Olympics brings out the patriotism in me. Watching Michael Phelps in 2008 was especially bittersweet; while he was earning golds and the anthem played for him, my son was going through Air Force boot camp. So every time the anthem played, I thought of my son- who looks like Michael. And then when Michael hugged his mom, Debbie — oh, the joyful tears it brought me! I transferred missing my son and all my pride for MY son onto Michael. Then, ironically, when I went to my son’s basic training graduation, I told him about it and he said, “Michael who?”

I can’t wait for the Olympics to start!

  39. The first week of the Summer Olympics is my favorite because Swimming is featured that week. I’ve been know to plan events around the Olympic schedule so I don’t miss anything. I get so wrapped up in the Olympic spirit I will even watch table tennis. I can’t wait!!

  40. I’m a huge Olympics fan, something about the whole atmosphere of it completely absorbs me. Proud to be volunteering in the London Olympics, am sure that it will be an amazing experience. I can’t wait to see the basketball and athletics, particularly the latter where I am certain that history will be made.

  41. Oh, I love it! I don’t really watch that much sport, but I’ve always loved watching the Olympics.
My favourite sport is usually gymnastics, and whilst that still is a favourite, I started running last year and so I’m pretty excited to watch the running races!

  42. I agree with you! Since i can remember (and i know I’m still very young xD) that I love the Olympics! I actually don’t leave the couch and get up early so I don’t miss any. I love mostly gymnastics, swimming, tennis and track :D
I think this year will be even better because, as the games are in London (and I’m Portuguese) they will be airing in the same time zone from where i am. I can’t see why that isn’t awesome :D

  43. The Olympics always brings back memories as well. But the first thing I usually think is, “Wow, has it been FOUR years already” lol. I’m sure this year, being 2012, will especially have numerous memorable moments.

My favorite events to watch are gymnastics and diving. I always seem to find a major crush when the Olympics come around, and the said person usually comes from the USA women’s gymnastics team. Last time around the girl was Nastia Liukin. Her form is wonderful and she is a joy to watch. I just finished watching the Olympic trials and this year my eyes are glued on Alexandra Raisman:)….so yeah, here’s to some major GIRL POWER lol. <3 <3

  44. I can’t wait! I’ve been watching the Olympic trials, but it’s kind of a roller coaster b/c I can’t seem to help bursting into tears every time someone falls off their uneven bars or misses out on their chance to go to London by a tenth of a second. But I also cry at the good moments. For someone who never cries, the Olympics sure brings it out of me!

  45. It is so exciting. We live under 10 minutes away from the Olympic park, and we are taking our girls to see the torch relay tonight. Our world is awash with London 2012 fever and I am trying to embrace it wholeheartedly: once in a lifetime opportunities like this only happen, like, erm, once in a lifetime!

  46. The Olympics are my favorite as well. I grew up watching Mary Lou and Scott Hamilton. And I love learning the stories behind the athletes and more about the different cultures of the countries represented. This will be the first Olympics that my kids will probably remember. I am SO excited to get to introduce them to the fun!

  47. I enjoy sports… live sports, not necessarily televised sports. I would rather watch a round of golf or a tennis match than a game of basketball or football. Baseball is slowly growing on me (as I live in the home of the Baseball-Cooperstown, NY). If it’s going to be televised, it better be an extreme sport to catch and hold my attention (the X-Games are fun to watch). However, the Olympics tend to mesmerize me! I can’t get enough of them! This year, I will be paying close attention to the triathletes, as a former resident of Cooperstown, Sarah Groff, will be competing for the USA! Her mother used to teach my 7th grade science class, I once worked a summer with her brother-who went to school with my husband, I have read her sister’s NY Times Best Seller, and her mother has switched careers (she’s a pediatric physician’s assistant) and has now seen my daughters as patients. So, we are not only feeling compelled to watch, we are ecstatic! Can’t wait for the Olympics in general; but rest assured, we will be rooting for Sarah Groff!

  48. Hi love the sentiment of your blog. I’m lucky enough to be able to enjoy the Games first hand and have put overhear a little blog of what’s to come at Geoffsolympics.com. I hope to post pictures up of the action on a daily basis.
